This could be the case on the weekend, as some areas are forecast to receive up to 100mm of rain.
While the Highlands has experienced light rain this week, Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) meteorologist Rebecca Kamitakahara said showers could become "more widespread" from Friday.
"Rain could persist in the area on Saturday and Sunday," she said.
"There is potential for some heavy rainfall. It's likely severe weather warnings will be issued for the weekend."
Ms Kamitakahara said the BoM could issue flood warnings in some areas.
The rain could provide some relief to those working on the fire fronts.
Firefighters are still working on the Green Wattle Creek, Morton, Currowan and Bannaby fires.
