Wingecarribee Shire Mayor Duncan Gair has welcomed the announcement by the Rural Fire Service (RFS) declaring the Shire safe to visit following the recent bush fires.

"This is great news for our Shire, our residents and businesses," he said.
The NSW Rural Fire Service informs that the fires which had previously threatened parts of the Shire are being controlled and do not present any danger at this time to the main tourist areas of the Southern Highlands.
"This means that both guests and locals can once again enjoy all the wonderful delights that our Shire has to offer," the Mayor said.
"I'd encourage anybody wishing to explore our Shire to contact Council's Destination Southern Highlands tourism team for the inside tip on some great locations, venues and attractions.
"At the same time I'd urge locals to invite families and friends from outside the region back to the Shire and reacquaint them with our renowned Southern Highlands hospitality."
Mayor Gair also spoke of future plans to welcome visitors back to the Shire.
"I've had some preliminary discussions with the General Manager and Group Manager of Tourism and Economic Development on how we can attract guests back to the Highlands," he said.
"One short-term suggestion involves a Council sponsored promotional campaign.
"Should this be ratified by Council we'll also be seeking assistance from Destination NSW to leverage the campaign."
Mayor Gair also paid tribute to local RFS crews and emergency services personnel.
"We owe a great deal of gratitude to everyone who's protected our Shire during this unprecedented event," he said. "I'm confident that greener days are now ahead."
"I'm also happy to report that the region has also received some welcome rain in recent days and the transformation to both the landscape and spirits has been immediate."
