Wollondilly Fire Control Centre community liaison Elizabeth Ellis said the conditions were much cooler for January 1.
"We're happy that the fires stayed in the containment lines in light of the unstable weather conditions we had yesterday," she said.
"With easing fire conditions crews are working on a containment strategy to plug any gap in the containment lines to make sure that we are well and truly secure.
"There is an active fire north west of Mittagong and crews are looking to contain it. It has been held in containment lines.
"The weather conditions will get very hot on Saturday but at the moment the north-easterly winds are predicted to be fairly gentle.
"It's the winds that are driving the fire.
"Winds are currently worse on the western front of the fire near Wombeyan Caves but the conditions today are mild.
"We are very relieved that the fires have stayed in the containment lines overnight."
Temperatures for Saturday January 4 are predicted to reach 41 degrees Celsius.
Current Situation
