According to spokesperson for Endeavour Energy plan maintenance is done with weather and bushfire forecasts in mind and reschedule planned work where possible to keep customers safe.
"It's a big job maintaining a network supplying 2.4 million people that is made up of more than 400,000 power poles, 32,000 substations and 50,000 kilometres of powerlines," they said.
"Maintenance is needed all year round so power supply remains safe and reliable and customers do not experience even longer unplanned interruptions.
"Planned maintenance is cancelled where temperatures are forecast to be 40°C or more, if there is catastrophic or extreme bushfire conditions or there is an active bushfire where customers need electricity to pump water.
"When temperatures are forecast to be 39°C, customer outages only occur if the maintenance can be completed by noon before the afternoon heat kicks in.
"We cancel outages affecting hospitals, retirement homes, schools, childcare centres or customers with registered home medical equipment where temperatures are expected to be 37°C."
Emergency response crews are on standby to respond quickly and restore power if there is an unplanned outage.
Customers who do lose power on hot days can call Endeavour Energy's emergency line 131 003.
