Keen photographer Sharon Freeman snapped this sparkling vision of Glow worms at Bundanoon.
The best time of year to see the glow worms is from December to February, especially after it has rained and Glow Worm Glen at Bundanoon is a great setting for this shining experience. Drive to William Street, on the right on the Moss Vale side of town. Park at the top end of William Street. From here a steep track descends towards the glen.

It will be pitch dark so you will need a torch for the trek. Make sure you put on some comfortable walking shoes as the lit-up experience takes about a 20-minute walk to reach. This is along a well-maintained bush track. Be mindful that the torch is strictly for use during the walk. It will need to be turned off once you reach the glow worm cave. Staying quiet is equally important.

For the record glow worms are not worms at all, but rather they are the larvae offspring of the fungus gnat. Adult fungus gnats lay about 130 eggs then die soon after. After eight or nine days the first larvae hatch. They position themselves near tiny cracks or seepage spots, where they can retreat to if conditions become too cold or dry.
The light is produced by a chemical reaction between certain body fluids and oxygen.
