However the Hill family of Hill Potato Farming said while it has been a strong start to the season, the rest of the season would hinge on further rainfall.
Jon Hill said the farm had 90mls of rain over the past two weeks and 50mls of rain in the fortnight before that.
"That's really an ideal kick off for us," Jon said.
"You get some pasture growth and moisture in the ground, it makes it easier to work and get things away.
"That's the way the doctor ordered it. It doesn't always happen like that," Jon's father Jack Hill said.
The family recently harvested potatoes to be sent off to chip factories.
If there is low rainfall in the coming weeks, the family will need to irrigate the crops.
"We've got to be prepared to irrigate and hope not to have to do it," Jack said.
"It's a very expensive operation to irrigate, but we've got to keep moisture in our soil to keep the plants growing."
The Hill family has been in the farming business for more than 50 years, and had their "backs to the wall" during the last two seasons.

"We do everything, we do our own freight and we've done it a bit tough. In saying that that's happened in my lifetime two to three times," Jack said.
"It seems to travel in cycles and if the weather comes good, we'll get that little bit of cream.
"We won't have to put it into irrigation, we can probably put that into a bit of machinery maintenance. Everything goes back into the farm."
According the Bureau of Meteorology, there is a five per cent chance of rain on Thursday and a 10 per cent chance of rain on Friday.
Meanwhile there is a 30 per cent chance of rain on Saturday.
While the conditions can be tough, Jack said the family enjoyed their work.
"We're happy, as long as we're making a living," he said. "It's our lifestyle that we like, and it's a good place to live."
Potatoes from Hill Potato Farming are available in independent supermarkets and markets on a seasonal basis.
