Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue crews were called to the house just before 8pm on Sunday, and left the scene at midnight.
Rural Fire Service community safety officer Inspector David Stimson said the firefighters did everything they could to save the home.
"The location of the house is fairly remote. When firefighters first arrived, their original thought was it was a chimney fire," Inspector Stimson said.
"The fire had moved up into the roof space, the house became fully involved and [the firefighters] did everything they possibly could to save the house.
"They managed to save the adjoining buildings."
NSW Fire and Rescue Mittagong captain Gerry Conway said the incident was a timely reminder about the importance of smoke alarms.
"The occupants were alerted to the fire by the activation of the smoke alarm," Captain Conway said.
"Every home should have a working smoke alarm."
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
