High Range recorded wind gust of 91 kilometres an hour at 11am on Tuesday morning.
An intense Tasman low and an associated cold front will produce a strong and gusty winds along the coast and the adjacent ranges.
These winds will whip up heavy surf conditions, making coastal activities dangerous, and bringing the potential for coastal erosion.
Damaging winds averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 90 km/h are currently impacting the southern and central parts of the coast.
Locally destructive wind gusts are possible about the coastal fringes during the morning.
These winds are forecast to extend north, reaching the rest of the warning area by the early afternoon.
Areas most affected by the damaging winds will be the coastal fringes and the higher parts of the ranges.
Winds then are expected to gradually ease from the south during this afternoon.
Locations which may be affected include Bowral, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Taree, Newcastle, Gosford, Sydney, Wollongong, Nowra and Batemans Bay.
