Moss Vale’s Murray Sowter from Murribrook Holsteins took part in Australia’s largest dairy and dairy machinery expo in Victoria on January 20 -24 2019 and walked with the blue ribbon in several categories.
The expo showcased the latest developments in Australian dairy cattle, farming practices, dairy knowledge and dairy breeding.
Mr Sowter’s heifer, Murribrook Solomon Tamborine was crowned the Holstein Junior Champion as well as the Supreme Junior Champion in the all breeds division. Mr Sowter’s other Holstein cow Murribrook Atwood Ivy came first in the Cow 5yrs in Milk category, while another of his cows, Murribrook Capital Cadence was runner up in the Cow 2yrs in Milk category.
In total, Mr Sowter showed five cows and walked away with four accolades under his belt. Mr Sowter said while he had a good show he had hoped to achieve more.
“We were reasonably competitive but we would’ve liked to do better,” he said.
“It’s a very big show in the country, to take five and to be in the top three is still good.”
Mr Sowter’s show success is a silver lining on what has been a tough year as he has struggled farming through drought and low market prices for milk.
Mr Sowter said that he gets less for the milk produced, than what he did in 2000 and he’d be lucky to get $130 a week.
“When you have a prolonged period of low income and drought, which increases your cost, it makes it very challenging.”
