The class is based on the well-researched Dance for Parkinson’s program which began in Brooklyn, New York, in 2001.
Movement is regarded as a medicine for those with Parkinson’s Disease.
Being stimulated creatively, physically and mentally helps with neuroplasticity, with initiating and sustaining sequences of movement which have become difficult with the symptoms of the disease.
By approaching movement as a dance student, not as patients, people with Parkinson’s can focus on PD specific concerns like mobility, balance, rhythm and flexibility in an enjoyable and communal environment.
Various low complexity movements, including some seated exercises to live music, help with rhythm and looseness as an antidote to the rigidity and paucity of movement often experienced as symptoms of the disease.
Research validates the importance of regular exercise and dance wins the prize.
The class is a gentle workout for the brain and body with a sense of fun resulting in elevated mood and relaxation and freedom of movement.
A focus on improvisation helps with initiation of movement. Improvisation is a requirement for living.
It demands instantaneous reaction, self direction, and self motivation and an ability to react to change.
Moving to music in a group which understands the limitations of Parkinson’s allows an opportunity to embrace one’s imperfections and experience joy.
Classes will be held weekly on Thursdays from February 7 at Bowral Baptist Church hall, Merrigang Street.
The classes will be held from 1.30-3.00pm.
This includes an hour of exercise component and time after for socialising and a cuppa.
The cost for people with Parkinson’s is $10.
Carers, friends and family are welcome at no charge.
