The latest figures from Revenue NSW have revealed Wingecarribee Shire Council issued 154 less fines to motorists from July to October 2019, compared to the same period in 2017.
There were 603 fines issued from July to October 2018 period, which totaled $91,103.
Meanwhile council’s parking rangers issued 757 penalty notices from July to October 2017, which totaled $98,145.
Three years ago, revenue raised from parking fines was higher.
In the July to October 2015 quarter, 851 tickets were issued and a total of $103,282 was raised.
A council spokesman said the decrease was a reflection on motorist behaviour.
“Contrary to popular belief council doesn’t enjoy handing out parking fines,” the spokesman said.
“Parking rules are designed to promote vehicle turnover, increase the availability of parking in our CBD areas and in turn support local businesses.
“The decrease in fines issued is reflective of the increase of local motorists doing the right thing and following these parking rules.”
Wingecarribee Shire Council’s revenue from parking fires could be lower this year.
At the December 12 ordinary meeting, councillors voted to reduce parking fines from $112 to $80.
The decision will cost council about $85,000.
The change was a part of a review by the NSW government into the cost of parking fines on state-government land, including national parks.
The state government gave councils the opportunity to reduce parking fines.
