The special fundraising event for Cancer Council will be held on the weekend of October 20 and 21.
It aims to bring the community together to celebrate survivorship, remember loved ones lost and fight back against cancer.
Teams of friends, families and colleagues are encouraged to begin raising money in the lead up to an overnight event held at Moss Vale Showground, where team members take turns walking around a track to signify that cancer never rests, so neither do we.
Organised by passionate, local volunteers, each relay event is an experience that will stay with you forever.
Activities designed to celebrate survivors and recognise their carers are held and those lost are honoured during a candlelight ceremony.
All the while funds continue to be raised to support people affected by cancer, fund research and improve cancer prevention.
Cancer Council NSW community relations co-ordinator, Kelly Dinnerville said the Southern Highlands area was lucky enough to have a Transport to Treatment Bus, and so this year a large portion of the money raised would go back in to this program.
“Here at Cancer Council we like to put the money raised straight back into the local community,” she said.
“We hope everyone will come out and support us this year even if that means just walking for an hour.”
Everyone is welcome at Relay, no matter your age or ability.
You can take part however you like by walking, jogging, running, wheeling or even dancing – it’s your Relay For Life.
Here’s what else you can expect at Relay:
- Survivors of cancer and their carers are the heart of every Relay, so each Relay begins with a lap around the track in their honour
- Teams of Relayers pass a baton as they keep someone on the track at all times, day and night
- In between laps, experience all the activities you can enjoy such as entertainment from local performers, competitions and games for the whole family
- At sunset, we light up the darkness in memory of those we’ve lost during our candlelight ceremony
- Inspiring speakers then give us hope for a cancer-free future by sharing important updates about the advancements in Cancer Council’s work.
At the end of the Relay, there will be a closing ceremony that celebrates the incredible achievements and motivates all to continue the fight against cancer.
In 2018 Southern Highlands Relay For Life aims to raise a total of $200,000 which will go towards funding cancer support and prevention programs in the local area as well as funding world-class research that will improve treatment and support for cancer patients and their families in the Southern Highland and across Australia.
