Four Southern Highlands team members were asked to travel to the Bega area to assist with community field liaison work.
The community field liaison role involves going out into nominated community areas to inform residents about fire safety.
Discussions included smoke that may be generated from backburning, and what to do in the event of an immediate fire threat.
The Bega area has been dealing with a large bushfire for more than a week.
RFS community safety officer Inspector David Stimson said the community field liaison role was a key job in the community.
“It’s becoming an increasingly important role,” he said.
“To have this facility for people to find relevant and up-to-date information is important.”
Inspector Stimson said it was important for both Southern Highlands and South Coast residents to have a bushfire survival plan in place for the coming fire season. “I think people should be aware they shouldn’t be led into false sense of security with little rain we’ve had,” he said.
“This has done nothing to relieve the dry soil moisture content, and not much rain has been predicted [for the coming months].
“They need to prepare themselves for what’s going to be a challenging ahead. It’s important to prepare a bushfire survival plan.”
