But the talented Year 12 Oxley College student went much further than that, recently playing in a national tournament.
Oscar was part of the Combined States team that competed at the Australian Schools Championships.
The side was made up of players from NSW, Queensland and the ACT.
Playing in the First XV for Oxley this year, Oscar was selected in the ISA Second XV to play at a schoolboys trial.
From this trial, teams were selected to compete at the schools championships.
Played at St Ignatius College, the Combined States side played teams from NSW, Western Australia, Queensland and Victoria.
“At the initial trial my goal was to make an ISA team. I was hoping to be in Firsts or Seconds,” he said.
“I didn’t expect anything. I was stoked I made Seconds. Anything after that was a bonus.”
Oscar said playing at the schools championships was a tough step up from school football but after a few games he felt more at ease.
Playing in the front row at loosehead prop and tighthead prop, he said he was happy with the way he played although he didn’t manage to cross the try line.
“I certainly improved my tackling in defence and learnt a few things to take back to school footy.”
A highlight for Oscar was starting in the match against Western Australia where he got plenty of game time and enjoyed being out on the field.
Apart from representative duties and school rugby, Oscar has also played a few games with the Eastwood Colts in the Sydney competition.
He got involved with the club through players he met in Illawarra sides and took part in some of the team’s pre-season training and trial games.
While he has not been able to play many competition games for them due to his commitments with Oxley, he has played a few games in the school holidays.
Playing rugby since Year 2 for Bowral Blacks and Illawarra, Oscar said the step up the Sydney competition had proven to be a big challenge.
“The physicality is really different and some of the other boys have got a couple of years experience under their belt. But it’s good to learn from them.”
His focus will now be on the ISA finals with Oxley.
Eastwood has also made the finals in their Colts division and Oscar said if he was able, he hoped to play in the finals with them also.
Looking ahead to next year, he has yet to decide where he will play but is determined to continue his involvement with the sport.
“We’ll see what happens but I’ll just keep playing footy and keep enjoying it.”
