The annual relay run raises money for batyr, a youth mental health organisation focused on preventative education.
ANU student and batyr member Sarah Crosby said she had been inspired to join the organisation after hearing from a speaker during her first year at university.
“Hearing a batyr speaker had a big impact on me. It helped me to understand how prevalent these issues really are and gave me the confidence to reach out when I needed help and to encourage others to do the same,” Ms Crosby said.
Civic2Surf starts in Canberra on Friday, August 17. A relay of 73 runners will travel to Bowral where they will be greeted by a dinner at Bong Bong racecourse donated by members of the Highlands community.
Saturday morning begins with a memorial leg in honour of Highlander Harriet Nixon who had been an active member of batyr and participated in the relay in 2016.
“I know Harriet was very passionate about Civic2Surf and it’s such a meaningful way for a group of students to come together to support batyr,” Ms Crosby said.
“There will be a breakfast at the racecourse from 6:30am until around 9am and has been generously donated by Baker's Delight Bowral, Harris Farm Bowral, Magnificup, Oxley Butchery, Mauger's Meats and Coles Bowral.”
