Southern Highland News reader Carol Giovanetti spotted an animal with a fish in its mouth in the creek in Bowral Street on Saturday morning.
Carol sent us a message on Facebook and posed a question about whether the animal was an otter or a rakali.
We put this question to Wingecarribee Shire Council’s environment team.
The verdict was unanimous that the animal was a rakali or native Australian water rat.
Rakali are known to frequent the area and others nearby like Cecil Hoskins Reserve.
The animals are identifiable by their distinct white tip tail.
