AS WE head into the cooler months, don't forget about your feet. That's the message from podiatrist, John Niemotko, who said cold weather can pose a problem for feet, especially in seniors.

“Dry skin is very common as we head into colder weather,” said Mr Niemotko, a clinical supervisor at the University of Newcastle in NSW.

“Many people experience dry skin, chapped lips and cracked heels. Because of the lack of moisture in the foot, it is very easy for the skin to become dry, which causes cracked heels, especially in winter.”

The key is to keep your feet well moisturised to prevent the skin from cracking.

Follow these tips:

  • Long, hot showers might be perfect on a cold day, but long exposure to hot water can strip the moisture from feet. Stick to warm or lukewarm showers.
  • Clean and dry your feet properly. Fungal infections can occur when feet aren't washed or dried thoroughly.
