Several Moss Vale Basketball Association teams travelled to Canberra to compete and all finished with excellent results.
The under-12 girls (division two), under-14 boys (division one) and under-16 boys (division one) all won their divisions.
For the girls, Lily Ragan was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the side’s 56-33 win over Canberra Capitals White..
In the under-14 boys Will Burke was the MVP after the side defeated Illawarra Hawks White 69-38 and for the under-16 boys it was Nathan Brumfield as they beat Wagga Wagga Heat in a close 67-65 match.
The under-12 boys (division three) were both runners up.
The boys went down to Wagga Wagga Heat in the grand final 60-49.
Moss Vale Basketball Association representative director and under-12 girls coach Clint Bentley said it was an excellent result for the association.
Bentley said the under-12 girls finished undefeated and it was a strong effort from the under-16 boys who finished in the “middle of the road” after competition rounds and fought hard to get all the way through to the decider which they won.
It was also a good weekend for the under-14 boys, who Bentley said had struggled against Illawarra prior to the finals weekend where they beat them twice. “We’re one of the smaller associations [but[ we play well above our weight in some respects,” Bentley said.
“There are not too many other associations around that have such small numbers as we do that manage to get the results we do. It’s an outstanding achievement and a lot of hard work.”
In the championship division, Moss Vale’s under-18 boys team finished third and the under-14s girls came second.
The boys lost the playoff match 65-55 against Goulburn Bears while the girls went down in their match 64-26 against Canberra Capitals White. This will enable both teams to enter a qualifying competition for the Country Championship League (CCL) to be held over the June long weekend.
Bentley said last year Moss Vale had its first ever team- under-16 boys- qualify for the CCL in what was formerly known as the Country Premier League.
