Up against Robertson Maroon, Moss Vale edged out a 1-0 win.
Kelly Ewen scored for Moss Vale 20 minutes into the match in what coach Bill Smillie described as a :very smart goal”.
Moss Vale goalkeeper Angela D’Adam had a good game and ensured her side kept a clean sheet.
Smillie said it was a superb defensive effort from his side.
“Robertson are an athletic side and they played to their strengths. We controlled the ball really well for most of the game but got a bit fatigued towards the end,” he said.
“We’ve scored a lot of goals this year but it was a superb defensive effort. It’s another string in our bow that we can defend a lead.”
Smillie said Jennifer Menzies and Amanda Parker defended well at the back while 14-year-old Jessica Orchard played well up front.
Both he and Robertson coach Damien Plain said it was a tough match that both their teams had needed.
Plain said it was good to have a touch match but Robertson was far from its best on Saturday.
“We need to work in capitalising on our opportunities. We’re creating opportunities but we’ve got to make sure we find the back of the net.”
It will be another tough match for Robertson this weekend when they face Hill Top.
The Kookaburras now sit in second spot on the ladder after a 7-0 win over Mittagong Yellow.
After a poor performance the week before, Hill Top coach John Parsons was much happier with the most recent result.
“I was happy with what we did with the ball. It was a big improvement from the previous week,” he said.
“Our possession was good and we had some nice movement with the ball.”
Julaina Pudney found the back of the net four times for Hill Top with Isabel Preston also scoring two goals while Tayla Parsons picked up one as well.
Looking ahead to the weekend’s match Parsons said his side would need to improve on what they did without the ball. The match after Hill Top will take on Moss Vale Red, another big challenge.
“They’ve got some quality players in both those sides. The focus for the next couple of weeks is what we do without it [the ball]. It’s a big challenge [and] we’re looking forward to it,” Parsons said.
In other results Mittagong Green defeated Yerrinbool 8-0, Moss Vale White got up over Robertson Gold 2-0 and Bowral had a 3-0 win over Moss Vale Black.
