For the first time in 2018, Mittagong Lion’s under-16 girls side scored some points and celebrated victory.
The girls team won their first game with a muddy 18-12 defeat over Bowral.
Playing in wet weather, coach Kayla Schmidt said it was a tough game given the conditions.
“It was freezing, so cold,” Schmidt said.
“It was like ice, sloppy, wet, muddy and rainy.”
The Lions went to the break with a 14-8 lead and held onto their lead until the final whistle.
Schmidt said she was “beyond proud” of her team.
“They’re a fairly new team. They started playing at the end of last season and have only played 10 games,” she said.
“This was the first time they scored any points and their first win.
“Their efforts have really paid off.”
Schmidt said the team’s success was a result of a strong defence and holding onto the ball in tough conditions.
“Considering the poor weather, their ball control was exceptionally strong,” she said.
“It was a great, solid game.”
Mittagong’s next match will be against Appin on May 19 in Bargo.
