41 years of the Brigadoon fun

Highlanders and people from afar dressed up in their best tartan for a full day of Scottish games, entertainment, and meeting the clans.

The fun kicked off with a street parade at 9am and Bundanoon was the home to the sound of bagpipes until the closing parade at 4.30pm.

The Scottish dancing was a crowd favourite and saw many audience members take to the stage to show off their best moves.

Bundanoon Highland Gathering vice president Alastair Saunders said although the games and entertainment were a success, he was disappointed with the crowd turnout, which he estimated to be under 10,000 people.

“There was an excellent crowd at the start of the day up until 1pm, but then it died down. I think the heat became too much for people.” Mr Saunders said.

Despite the disappointing turn out, Mr Saunders was thrilled with how the events played out.

“All the events from the children’s games, to the stones of manhood, have been a huge success, especially the heavyweight championships. Strength, speed, stamina, you can’t beat that,” he said.

“But they don’t beat the marching bands and the closing finale. That’s my favourite part of Brigadoon. March bands to me, make the day.”

The winner of the stones of manhood was three-time winner Luke Reynolds.

“It feels really good to get three in a row,” Reynolds said.

“I think that makes the record, so it feels really good, especially since I’ve just come back from an injury.

“If I could come back and win again next year, I think that would be great.”

Brigadoon 2019 will be held at Bundanoon Oval on April 6.
