Taree detectives charged Victor Ian Melville, 62, with sexual assault and carnal knowledge of a girl in the mid 1980s. He has not entered a plea. The matter will return to Taree Local Court in May.
Mr Melville is described as a former Western Australian businessman with a prominent profile in that state.
He was well known as an Australian Rules football player in the 1980s, playing 40 games for Subiaco club in the Western Australian Football League between 1980 and 1983.
The offences are alleged to have occurred while Mr Melville visited the Taree area.
