It was the result that stopped the nation.
Millions of Australians across the country stopped and tuned in to hear the results of the same-sex marriage postal survey delivered by Australian Statistician David Kalisch from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Groups gathered to hear the news. Breaths were held across the country.
Four minutes and 529 words later, Mr Kalisch said the ones the nation was waiting for: the yes has the vote.
And then came the tears, the laughs, the celebrations and the reflection.
Australia had voted yes.
She wasn’t alone.
In homes, in workplaces, at community centres and cafes, there were scenes of utter joy.
