Prices are expected to rise in the lead-up to Christmas, in accordance with world oil prices and a fall in the Australian dollar.
On Tuesday, the highest price for e10 in the Highlands was 142.9 cents per litre. The highest price for e10 in Sydney was 139.9 and the highest price in Goulburn was 138.4.
The average monthly petrol price in Moss Vale increased from 127.8 cents per litre in the June quarter to 129.5 in the September quarter.
There was better news for motorists that filled up in Mittagong, as the average monthly petrol price fell from 131.3 cents per litre in the June quarter to 129.5 in the September quarter.
Meanwhile up the road at Goulburn, motorists had an average monthly price of 117.4 in the June quarter and 119.9 in the September quarter. Southern Highlands Taxis owner Laurie Stewart said price rises had an effect on his business.
The taxi company has 35 vehicles and three coaches, and spends about a quarter of a million dollars on petrol annually. “The price is becoming more and more exorbitant,” Mr Stewart said. “When you compare it with the independent service stations, how can they do it so much cheaper?”
NRMA head of media Peter Khoury encouraged motorists to take advantage of real-time petrol price apps.
“Each town is effectively its own market,” Mr Khoury said. “It’s not uncommon to see price differences. If you’re travelling a long distance, there’s every chance you’ll pass a cheaper price.
