Artists, art lovers and other curious community-minded folk gathered at the Bowral and District Art Society (BDAS) on Friday night, October 27 for the Southern Highlands Art Festival’s official launch.
Newly-appointed manager of Retford Park, Scott Pollock, did the honours of introducing the arts festival, which he said was “such a great vehicle for promoting the importance of art.”
“I can only speak personally, but for me art has no boundaries. It is a release of emotion, a release of energy. It is a language. It is the most wonderful form of communication,” Mr Pollock said.
Councillor Larry Whipper also spoke on the night, and expressed his support for a thriving arts community in the Highlands.
The feature event of the Southern Highlands Art Festival is the Arts Studio Trail, which runs over two weekends in November.
Artists across the Highlands will open their doors and invite visitors inside to explore their creative dwellings on the weekends of November 4-5 and November 11-12 from 10am to 5pm.
Council’s Cultural Development Officer Jenny Kena said this year’s Art Studio Trail is bigger than ever.
“We’ve got a record 44 studios displaying works from more than 60 artists. This includes 15 new studios joining us for the first time.”
The home studios span across the shire – from Colo Vale to Joadja and throughout Robertson.
There will also be a diverse range of exhibitions, workshops, vintage markets and musical performances happening throughout November as part of the festival.
