Leon Gross recently snapped this picture at Braemar as the cicada shed its shell.
The colourful sight of this creature will be enjoyed for only a short time as adult cicadas live for only a few weeks. Cicadas are the loudest insect in the world and there are more than 200 species in Australia. The sound of a cicada is a sure sign of summer, but only male cicadas sing. They do this in an attempt to find a mate.
