In 2014 Lucinda O’Brien’s mother Sue Sweeney was diagnosed with brain cancer- Glioblastoma Multiform 4.
Sue was one of the many people from the area who have battled the disease.
She passed away last year.
Currently there is no cure for Glioblastoma Multiform 4.
Lucinda said it was a terminal prognosis with a 14-15 month prognosis and doctors could only treat patients to give them some extra time.
Now, Lucinda wants to try and ensure “no more families suffer like we did”.
Lucinda and her family have been a part of the Highlands community for 40 years.
After taking part in Walk4BrainCancer events in Canberra and Cronulla, Lucinda decided to start one in Bowral in honour of her mother.
Her friend Anita Roelevink has also helped organise the event and she too has a personal connection with brain cancer.
Anita’s mother Julie also had brain cancer and lost her battle with the disease two weeks after Sue passed away.
Lucinda said the event was a tribute to all Highlanders who had battled brain cancer.
The walk will be held at Bong Bong Racecourse on October 29 from 10am.
All money raised will go to the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation.
“It goes towards treatment and a cure. It goes straight to the source and towards research which is what I love about it,” Lucinda said.
The fundraising goal started at $5000 but was quickly reached.
Lucinda upped the total to $10,000 but that goal too has been beaten.
As of October 12, Lucinda had raised $11,747.
“We’re going to smash it,” she said of the fundraising goal.
Already 135 people have registered for the event and Lucinda said she expected more on the day.
There will also be plenty of fun activities to keep everyone entertained and raise some more funds for the foundation.
Live music, a jumping castle, an inflatable obstacle course and face painting are just some of the many activities that will be on offer at the event.
It will cost $5 a ride or $15 for unlimited rides.
Registration will take place at 9.30am
Cure Brain Cancer products will also be available on the day.
- Adult (16 years +): $30
- Children (under 5 free): $20
- Family (2 adults and 2 children): $90
