The Highlands action group has called for an independent government inquiry or a NSW Upper House inquiry as well as a meeting with Boral, the company that owns the colliery.
The claims the colliery continues to pollute the waterway came from research done by Western Sydney University’s Dr Ian Wright.
Battle for Berrima has written to Boral as well as MPs Jai Rowell and Pru Goward about a meeting.
The group will also write to the Premier to seek an immediate moratorium on any coal mining proposal in the Southern Highlands until an independent government inquiry has been established and reported on the Berrima Colliery and its impact on the drinking water of Sydney.
Battle for Berrima president Ken Wilson said the findings were extremely concerning.
““This is a critical issue on which the Boral Board and leadership have an immediate responsibility to respond urgently to the local Berrima community and indeed all those reliant on the Sydney Water Catchment”, he said.
“These are deeply disturbing findings that underpin the serious concerns already held about the impact of coal mining and exploration of any kind within the Sydney Water Catchment that Berrima and the Southern Highlands are located within.”
