The Bowral Alternative Teahouse (aka The BATH) offers 20 loose leaf teas – covering black, white, green and herbal – for tea lovers to discover.
Owner Gail Withers said the idea for a teahouse had been brewing for the past eight years.
“I wanted to create a place that felt comfy and cosy, to give people a warm feeling, like when you visit an auntie who gives you a biscuit whenever you visit,” she said.
“The idea started as an organic teahouse, then evolved to be a place where people who have dietary problems can order food easily.”
The name, while it is a convenient acronym, also has another meaning.
“What’s more relaxing than a cup of tea in the bath?” Gail said.
“Hopefully anyone who comes here will feel relaxed.”
Her father taught her how to make a ‘proper’ cup of tea when she was five years old, and since then tea has been her passion.
“While I’m not above tea bags, for those who love to make an occasion of drinking tea, I have a large range of loose leaf tea,” she said.
“The food here is organic mostly homemade, and local when we can. It’s simple, good, honest food, and the tea and coffee is sourced from the area.”
Each table has a special message for customers, which are changed each day.
“Whatever table you sit at, it will mean something to you, or it just maybe a little bit of fun,” Gail said.
Each metal tea pot is wrapped in a handmade crocheted cosy, made by employee Sheree McPak’s mother.
Smoothies, fresh juices and kombucha are also available.
For a quirky day out, the cafe holds Tea Leaf Tuesdays, where you can have your tea leaves read by one of the staff. Tea tasting is also on offer.
The BATH is open Tuesday to Sunday from 8.00am to 4.00pm. It is located at 362 Bong Bong St, Bowral.
