The T20 Smash is held once a year in the new break from the normal season.
Bowral took a nine wicket victory over East Bowral Blue Sky in the round one match at Lackey Park.
Bowral won the toss and elected to bowl first. Bowral skipper Chris Weller said it was crucial to get first use of the ball.
“The wicket was a bit juicy because it had been covered up for a few days. The toss was crucial and I think bowling first gave us the upper hand,” he said.
East Bowral stepped up to bat first. The opening partnership was made up by Michael Heyhorn and Rhys McDonald.
The pair put the first 12 runs on the board before they were dismissed. Heyhorn scored 11 of the runs while McDonald was only able to score one run.
Ravi Wikramanayake was third to bat and scored a solid 22 runs for East Bowral.
Dylan Palmer-Quigg top scored with 24 undefeated runs.
At the end of their innings, East Bowral were 6/86 off 20 overs.
Bowral put on a strong show in the field and were able to restrict East Bowral’s run score.
Peter Crawford took figures of 3-23 of four overs, which included one maiden.
Weller commended Crawford on his bowling and said he was a standout player in the match.
Murray Burgoyne also put on a strong bowling display and took 1-5 off four overs.
Chris Muldoon, Chris Weller, Peter Crawford, Cameron Belshaw, Jack Whitfield, Angus Lowden and Edward Heydon all took a catch each for Bowral.
Weller said the team did well in the field and produced a few good run outs and some great catches.
Bowral was next up to bat. The opening partnership was made up by Patrick Jackson and Jack Whitfield.
Jackson scored 21 runs while Whitfield scored a strong 49 undefeated runs.
“Full credit to Whitfield, he put on a great display with the bat for us,” Weller said.
Jack Pollard was the only other Bowral player to bat, securing 10 runs not out.
Bowral were able to chase down East Bowral’s total in 13.1 overs and finished with a nine wicket victory.
East Bowral showed good effort on the field.
Ryan Morton put on a good bowling display and took figures of 1-16 off three overs.
James Morton took the only catch for the side.
Weller also said it was good to get a win over East Bowral.
“They are a pretty dangerous side when it comes to their batting, so it was really pleasing to be a able to restrict them with their total.”
Bowral will play rounds three and four of the T20 smash over the weekend against Robertson and Wingello.
Weller said Bowral was looking forward to the matches, even though they would have a few first grade players out.
“It will be a good opportunity for the second grade players to step up. It will be a good way to lead some of the younger players into the higher grade,” he said.
Weller said the team enjoyed playing the T20 rounds.
“They are very different to the normal 40 over, two-day games but they are a lot of fun. I know all the boys really enjoy the T20 and it’s nice to have a break from the regular season.”
