Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) fire fighters from Bowral Fire Station encourage residents to get themselves and their homes ready for bush fires.
Station Commander John Arnot said fire fighters and emergency agencies would do everything they could to keep the community safe.
However, Mr Arnot said protection was a shared responsibility and the Highlands community needed to do its part.
"Know what you need to do to prepare yourself, your family and your home before a bush fire and know what each member of your family will do if a fire threatens," he said.
"I urge everyone living in bush fire prone areas to download a free Bush Fire Survival Plan from www.rfs.nsw.gov.au and have a conversation with the family.
"There are only two pages to fill in and those two pages could save the lives of you and your loved ones."
Residents who live in bushfire-prone areas are reminded to:
Keep lawns short and gardens well maintained
Cut back trees and shrubs overhanging buildings
Clean up fallen leaves, twigs and debris around the property
Have hoses long enough to reach around your house
If you have a pool, tank or dam put a Static Water Supply (SWS) sign on your property entrance
Check that your insurance is adequate and up to date
