Having moved into his new home, the master of this garden project was keen to minimise costs, yet create a welcoming outdoor space. As part of his garden makeover he had to “hide the old ugly timber fence and suppress noise from a neighbouring dog”. After researching materials and trade costs he realised DIY was the way to go to stay on budget.

The project
Wanting to suppress neighbour noise and have a low-maintenance fence, the modular SlimWall fence system was chosen. Rather than remove the existing fence, the new addition was erected inside the property boundary as a visual and acoustic screen. Lighting was added to posts to provide a “subtle night-time effect to the garden area”. Wiring was concealed inside internal rebates in the panels.
Materials used
The SlimWall has propriety support posts and fibre cement composite infill panels. Post holes were dug within the three-day project.
Time frame
As a first-time DIY installer the job took the owner three days to install from start to finish. The walls were painted in contrasting colours and ornaments hung from the panels.
The budget
Just under $3000 in fence materials, plus plants and lawn.
The result
An inviting, low maintenance space was created. The fence panels have acoustic qualities, the owner says, so noise from the neighbour's dog has been minimised. Paving edges a lawned area and decking provides the ideal spot for outdoor entertaining. Seating and a selection of clumping plants complete the look.
