Much to Beattie's delight, he nailed his first kingfish ever, which was 66cm.
He also got to release a dozen more that didn't size up for the esky.
Once finished playing with the kingfish, the duo headed a bit further south from Bass Point for snapper.
Iinstead, they ended up with a mix of tailor and trevally.
At one stage, Beattie's line took off and after watching the reel lose more than 200 metres of line at blistering speed, the presumed shark turned and bit through the mono leader.
By noon, the north-east wind was blowing around 20 knots. On the way home, a few surface lures were set as they trolled the washes near the rocks on their way back to Shellharbour and picked up salmon and some kingfish that were released.
Shaun Budd fished St Georges Basin over the weekend and ended up with whiting, bream and flathead.
Other fishos at the basin ended up with some good catches of flathead to 65cm and bream to 41cm in the shallow water, with most fish been caught on soft plastics.
Lake Illawarra has been producing nice flathead in the channel, as well as bream and flathead on the run-out tide.
George Kotoros ended up with three bream and four flathead to 50cm when fishing close to Windang Bridge.
Blue swimmer crabs are still popular, with most people getting their bag limit in just a few hours of crabbing.
Out on the inshore reefs, Trevor from Kiama Charters reported plenty of big tiger and sand flathead on 50 metres of water, with chinaman leather jackets proving to be a nuisance. Out of Port Kembla Islands, medium catches of morwong and snapper up to 40cm came in.
Out wide on the game fishing scene, black and striped marlin have been hooked off Sydney inside the 80 fathom line.
Dolphin fish have been pouncing on the marlin lures with one specimen going 15kg, but most fish have been around the 70cm mark.
Some makos up to 80kg have been spotted on the bait schools and for those who like to do some deep water drop lining, hapuka up to 14kg and some gemfish up to 3kg have been taken near Kiama Canyons.
