Junior trials
TRIALS were held last week and Southern Zone junior representative teams selected at under-12/13, under- 14 and under-16 levels.
Several Highlands players deserve congratulations on their selection.
Charlie Dummer, Lachie Murchie and Lleyton Wallace were picked in the under-16s, Ryan Emmerick, Billy McGuinness, Dom O'Shannessy and Ravi Wickramanayaka in the under-14s, and Zac de Hassen and Eddie Hayton in the under-12s.
Congratulations to Highlands left-arm opening bowler Lauren Cheatle, who made her debut as a squad member for the NSW Breakers in the national women's competition last weekend.
Cheatle led the victorious Highlands under-16s representatives recently and was the sole girl in the team.
She also captained the NSW under-15 girls side last summer.
Cheatle was recently named in the NSW Metro side for the Under-18 Female National Championships. It will be interesting to chart her progress through the women's ranks.
Grade cricket
THE continuing inclement weather has played havoc with grade cricket in the Highlands.
With just this weekend's one-day games to play before the Christmas break, Goulburn and Hill Top are leading the way in first grade.
Robertson/Burrawang and Wingello make up the top four.
In second grade, Mittagong is on top with Robertson/Burrawang looking the biggest threat.
Bundanoon, East Bowral Blues, Bowral and Wingello are all well in the running for a semi-final spot.
Third grade looks a close competition at the halfway mark with just six points separating Bowral, Bundanoon, Mittagong and Wingello.
Veterans win
THE Highlands over-60s was one local team that did manage a game on the weekend when the side travelled to Lithgow to take on the Western Wildfires, prevailing in a very tight finish.
The home side posted 127 from its 40 overs, with John Morris and John Rennie each grabbing two wickets for the Highlands.
It looked an inadequate score, but the Highlands top order collapsed.
It took an unbeaten 31 from debutant Frank Nevill to steer his team home with just four balls remaining.
Laws of the Game
IN OUR series on "Laws of the Game" readers were asked last week: "At 9.14am, a player is seen (and stopped from) bowling on the strip adjacent to the pitch. He would not be eligible to bowl at start of play at 10am. When would he be released from the ban?"
The answer is 10.14am.
If the practice on the field law is contravened by a fielder he shall not be allowed to bowl after the contravention until either at least one hour has elapsed or there has been at least 30 minutes of playing time since the contravention, whichever is sooner.
This week we are asking "At what stage of the match can a captain declare his innings closed?"
