First prize and the $5000 purse went to Justin Pearson for his painting Brush of Frustration - Self Portrait.
Keith Dewell, who is a talented painter and draftsman, said he liked the design, the variety of colour and strong form.
"A variety of painting techniques used creates a strong, interesting yet harmonious work," he said.
Wayne Davis took second with his painting Mary, which Keith said created a quiet, understated yet nevertheless appreciative mood.
The highly commended award went to Peter Toohey for his work Much Loved Sculptor, May Barrie, which Keith said was a captivating character portrait.
The John Copes Portrait Prize is sponsored by Tim and Patricia Copes.
The exhibition will close on Monday, October 6.
