IT WAS the end of the road for Robertson Spuds on Saturday afternoon as they went down to Picton 24-4.
The loss knocked the Spuds out of the Group 6 division two competition.
Dropped ball again cost Robertson the match.
Picton captalised on its possession and scored two quick tries.
From then on, the Spuds desperately tried to get themselves back in the game.
"We had to try and play catch up footy the whole time and it just made things worse," Spuds skipper Doug Tilley said.
"The boys in patches defended well and when we did play with a bit of structure we looked good. But when things fell apart, they really fell apart."
Despite dreary conditions, there wasn't much rain during the match and Tilley said the field was fairly soft and a bit boggy.
Not a wet weather team, it was the second week the Spuds had had to play in wet conditions.
The Spuds started the season a bit shakey with a new squad but gained momentum in the second half of the season.
Robertson had two weeks off before its first finals match and Tilley said the team never recovered from the long break.
"I don't think we came back from those two weeks off. We're no good after one week off and I thought we'd come good but it wasn't meant to be."
Despite a crushing loss which eliminated the Spuds chances of claiming back to back premierships, Tilley said there were still some positives to come out of the season.
"We had some good young players come through again and that's what we need to keep the club going.
"We showed we can beat anyone, we just fell away at the end."
Tilley said Paddy Cairn, Jesse Streeter and Clay Caines were all standout players for the Spuds throughout the year.
Streeter also scored Robertson's only try on Saturday and Tilley said he was one of the best players on the field.
"He had a blinder. He got the ball about 15 (metres) out and dragged about five blokes over the line with him. He's been our best all year and our most consistent."
