BURRAWANG showed why it could well be the dark horse of the women's first grade competition with a win over Mittagong on Sunday.
Playing in the pouring rain, it was a tough match for both teams in the last match of the day.
It was not until the second half that Marly Gulson and Jess Eccleston broke the deadlock and each scored a goal for Burrawang with the final score 2-0.
Burrawang coach Craig Whatman said the win would be a huge confidence booster for his side with only a couple of matches remaining before the finals.
"Both teams played well and the girls certainly lifted and played with good intensity for the whole game," he said.
"Our defence scrambled well and it was really good. A win like that against one of the top teams is a major confidence booster coming into the semis."
Whatman said it was a great team performance on Sunday afternoon, with no real standout players. This weekend Burrawang will face Bowral.
"We've got to back it (the win) up this week and keep that form on the paddock and build momentum heading into the semis," Whatman said.
"They're (Bowral) certainly a team that's really improved. The girls have to be on their game to get over the top of them.
"It's a matter of the girls training hard and turning up with their A- game every week from now on."
Mittagong coach Yolande Isedale was still at a bit of a loss on Monday after Sunday's match.
"There was so much water everywhere and it really slowed everything down which didn't help us," she said.
"We created enough chances to win the game but we just didn't make the most of those chances. We just didn't adapt to the conditions."
While it was far from Mittagong's best performance, Isedale said Burrawang had certainly stepped up and improved this season.
"Full credit to Burrawang, they've been on the verge of a good win for awhile and it's good for them," she said.
"We're hoping for a sunny day (this) week. We play Moss Vale and we need to have a strong game coming into semis. We should have a full squad so no matter what happens we have no excuses."
