Members attended a light hearted and informative meeting at Highlands Pit Lane, Mittagong, where money was raised for a local charity.

After breakfast, everyone took their places to engage in the Up to Speed program run by the automotive workshop team.

Highlands Pit Lane owner Michael Farquhar and head mechanic Tod McInnes were on hand to provide informative tips.

Topics covered included why people must service their cars, how to check various components under the bonnet and how to check air pressure or put air in tyres.

After a brief introduction, the BWN members looked under bonnets, stood under various vehicles to check out the under body and suspension.

They were given a feel for the magnitude and complexity of the many systems involved.

Simon Sprague of Highlands Tyremasters offered advice on tyres and showed a couple of examples of tyres with uneven wear patterns.

As part of Highlands Pit Lane's community commitment, all funds raised from the Up to Speed program were donated to the BDCU Children's Foundation.

The event raised $415 and a cheque was presented to foundation vice-president Ross Stone.

"The foundation is very appreciative of the Business Women's Network and Highlands Pit Lane for their support of our efforts for local children, particularly the current mental health initiative," Mr Stone said. "Without the support of the community, we would be unable to achieve our objectives of providing support for local children."

The Up to Speed program aims to teach young drivers about being responsible about their vehicles and to learn how to keep safe on the road.

The program is run on the last Tuesday of each month at Highlands Pit Lane.
