IT WAS another tough weekend in the women's first grade competition.
Burrawang and Bowral finished with a 1-1 draw while Mittagong defeated Moss Vale 4-2.
After a couple of games where Bowral was slightly off the pace, it stepped up on Sunday.
Bowral took a 1-0 lead through Sian Churchill, who scored from a short corner in the first half.
It was not until the second half that Burrawang leveled the scored after Jodie Wolstencroft scored from a penalty stroke.
Bowral coach Darren Roberts was much happier with the team's performance this week.
"Our defence was solid. They had a few short corners but we kept them out and our attitude was a lot better than last week," he said.
Last time the two sides met the scoreline was 4-2 in favour of Burrawang.
Roberts said his side needed to find the back of net more from its chances, but was pleased Bowral was heading in the right direction.
"The main thing is we're not getting smashed. If they'd found the back of the net more it could have been a different result."
Jamie Bow, usually an inner, moved into the role of striker and played well with Claire Howe.
Holly Furphy and Felicity Miller were good in the halves while Roberts said the McNaught twins, Kate and Jen, were solid in defence.
This weekend Bowral will take on Moss Vale. Roberts hoped the team's continual improvement would result in a win.
Burrawang coach Craig Whatman was also pleased with his team's performance on Sunday night.
"The girls played well and they're starting to use their transfers a lot better and they're still creating plenty of opportunities," he said.
Michelle Ferrier played well in goals and kept Burrawang in the match.
Burrawang will face Robertson this weekend, in what is sure to be an interesting clash between the two sides.
"It'll be another tough one so the girls will need to lift themselves and be competitive."
In the other first grade match, Moss Vale captain Hannah Menzies said it was a disappointing loss for her side.
"I thought we had 80 per cent of the ball. We just had a few lapses and Mittagong took advantage to score some goals," she said.
"But there were still a lot of positives to come out of the game so hopefully we can go forward and turn it around next week."
Chelsea Lenarduzzi opened the scoring off a short corner in the 15th minute for Mittagong before finding the net again in the 28th minute from another short corner.
Mittagong held a 2-0 lead at the break before Hannah Urquhart (32nd minute) and Hayley Tickner (35th minute) scored for Moss Vale.
Rebecca Cross put Mittagong back in the lead in the 48th minute but the highlight of the match was under-13 player April Hamilton scoring her maiden first grade goal on debut in the 55th minute.
Mittagong coach Yolande Isedale said Moss Vale's two quick goals were an indication of just how dangerous teams could be given an opportunity.
The Lions then settled into the match but it was by no means an easy victory.
"It was a really good team effort from Mittagong.
"Moss Vale did push us and came out strong after half time but our girls worked well together," Isedale said.
Mittagong has the bye this weekend while Isedale said would give a couple of the team's injured players an extra week to recover.
