Despite the final score of 74-7 coach Scott Hayman said the game revealed how much the players had learned over the year.
“Earlier this year when we had a similar scoreline, there were a lot of dropped heads, but this time they kept their heads up and kept trying. We have bounced back from defeat before, and we plan to do it again,” he said.
It was a different story for Bowral’s under-14s. As they walked onto the ground to meet Kiama at Eridge Park, they were hoping for the opposite result of when the two teams met in 2009; the older and more experienced Kiama side trounced the gallant young Blacks in a one sided affair.
This the team fielded senior players in the age group who have made a habit of winning most of their games so far.
“The game started with a quick opposition try before the Blacks rallied with a try at the other end to even the score,” co-coach Ray Davidson said.
“The match followed this pattern with both teams stepping up to the challenge and there was nowhere to hide.”
The scrums were fairly even until the Blacks gained the upper hand against a tiring Kiama late in the second half. Some straight running close to the ruck and good recycling of possession allowed the Bowral boys to win on the day, with much jubilation on the field and on the sideline.
“This entertaining, and see-sawing game was played in good rugby spirit with both teams displaying skill and courage to the final whistle,” Davidson said.
They play Vikings this Sunday.
