The format proved a great success attracting teams from Goulburn, Austral, Bargo, and Robertson joining a strong contingent of locals from the Bowral Club.
10 Teams were pitted against each other in pairs format with three games of nine ends, including a power play on the eighth end worth double points.
Points were awarded for wins and margins accumulated for all games with the eventual winners taking home first prize of $400, and the runners up receiving $200.
“It’s a fast paced, exciting and skillful short format of the game, a bit like the Big Bash” said Dugald Braithwaite, Vice President of Men’s Bowls.
A highlight of the day was the unusual occurrence of the Anderson cousins winning a power play with six shots, effectively becoming a 12 for the end.
This gave them a handy lead after the first game, although they couldn’t hold onto their lead as the competition heated up.
The bowling was highly tactical and competitive across all rinks which was indicative of the very strong field.
This was no more evident than with the pair of Steve Della and ex Club President, local legend, Greg Lewis considered possible winners before play.
Across three games they went down by one, then two, then five shots with Lewis saying, “Great day, great format although I wouldn’t have minded winning a game.”
The competition ebbed and flowed, thus going into the final game of the day three teams sat atop the ladder with two wins a piece. One more win could secure the victory.
Team Ashley Lewis and Mick Spong fell at the last hurdle.
Russel Fahey and Kevin Stafford won and became club house leaders, although last to finish and picking up a big six on the power play the team of Carl Spilker and Nathan Boyers were the victors and collected first prize.
In line with the days innovative approach and replacing the usual sausage sizzle, a split roast sat cooking alongside the players during the day.
At the conclusion, all players, winners and losers received a delicious reward with a hot roast beef roll and cooling ale to discuss the days highs and lows, with great comradery all-round.
Super Saturday is a format set to stay with the next round being planned for early 2019.
