Moss Vale Magic's Tristan Glenn recently participated in Milwaukee in an AUU basketball tournament.
The AUU tournaments can improve skills, build connections and create interest from American Colleges. And many of those points were on Glenn's goal list.
"There were a lot of goals I wanted to achieve" Glenn said.
"I believe that I achieved all of them when I was over there. There are some that I'm not sure if I have accomplished just yet, there's more talks to be had, but all the personal goals I set I feel I achieved."
Glenn and his Australian team called 'AUSA Hoops' faced off with the cream of the crop in the American AUU system.
"Our team played pretty well," Glenn said.
"We had a lot of shooters which was great for me. We won a few games, lost a couple also, but we ended up playing one of the top teams in the nation. It was a tough ask but we played them really well overall.
"The talent was ridiculous over there. For the most part we shaped up to the teams really well. We out ran and out paced them a lot of the time.
"You can't beat those players first step, or their athleticism. You have to find others ways to get the job done. We stood out by playing tough defence and rebounding."
I'm definitely still on the hunt for a scholarship to an American college.
- Tristan Glenn
With football and cricket being among the popular of Australian sports, Glenn was in his element playing to crowd sizes he'd only experienced a handful of times.
"The game environment is what I enjoyed most," Glenn said.
"There is a very small amount of games in Australia where there's more than 10 or 15 people watching. In America, everyone comes out to watch."
Differences between the two countries versions of the game had Glenn thinking on the fly, but overall it improved his game.
"I had to adjust my game," Glenn said.
"The three point line was two foot closer in, so it was more of a mid-range shot to me.
"One of the things I wanted to do was improve on my mid-range game, so the stepping in of the three point line made that much easier."
The American college system is the long term goal for Glenn. It may not happen this time around, or it may, but the hunger and passion he has for the game will only bring good fortune.
"During the tournament, scouts can't talk to players," Glenn said.
"They have to get in contact afterwards. They have a very small time period to chat with players. They make contact a little while after the tournament.
"I'm definitely still on the hunt for a scholarship to an American college. I've got a lot of training to do here for the next Youth League competition, which is my main focus for now.
"But an American scholarship will always be my long term goal. Youth League season starts next year, hopefully I can play well through that, then hopefully go to college.
