Receiving the Senior sportsperson of the year award was the furthest thing on Benson's mind.
"I was very surprised, I certainly didn't expect to win it," Benson said.
"I knew I had accomplished some good achievements last year, but I didn't think I was in the running for sportsperson of the year. I was very surprised.
"I was really there to support the Berrima District Sports Awards and to collect my senior sportsperson of the month award. It was a well run night, the meals were lovely and it was a great social night out."
She defended her IFAA (International Field Archers Association) World Field Archery Championship in the dry heat of Potchefstroom in South Africa.
The tough, scorching weather conditions had competitors struggling and collapsing. But Benson emerged world champion again. "It was exhausting," Benson said.
"After shooting all day I was very tired. Some days would have 37-38 degrees of weather, but over there it's a very dry heat.
"There were long walks, the shortest being 7km and courses could take up to six hours to complete each day.
"But you just get up and get on with it. I'm quite determined, I went over there to defend my world title and you had to shoot the full five days. If you missed one day you were out of the running for the championship.
"It's a challenge, but you're quite excited to get out there and see how you go."
I wish I started earlier in my life. At first I didn't think I could do it at the start, but once I started I never looked back.
- Diann Benson
Diann started the sport later in her life. It was the sight of other athletes partaking in the sport that sparked the interest.
"It was something different. My children had left home, we used to show dogs, I was sick of showing dogs," Benson said.
"We went to the 2000 Sydney Olympic games and watched the archery and my husband said "why don't we give this a shot?"
"I wish I started earlier in my life. At first I didn't think I could do it, but once I started I never looked back.
"I was shooting for a little under 12 months and I was nominated for the NSW team. Then in 2006 was our first tournament overseas with Archery Australia,"
"We shot for a few months and then I was told "you're good enough to start shooting competition" so we started going down to the clubs at Illawarra and down the coast and continued from there."
The IFAA World Championship is held every two years. It will be held in 2020 at Estonia in Europe. Benson is still deciding whether to give it another shot.
"I'm not sure to be honest. The tournament in South Africa was very exhausting," Benson said.
"I'm not as young as I used to be. We'll see what life hands out in the next two years. I'll keep shooting to the best of my abilities and we'll see where we're at in 12 months."
