A group of Robertson women has decided to embrace a concept that has long been a success for men with the formation of a Women’s Shed.
Following the lead from many popular Men’s Sheds the Robertson initiative aims to become a place where women work on meaningful projects at their own pace, own time and in the company of other women.
A driving force behind the new Robertson Women’s Shed, Karon Sacks said there were already several Women’s Sheds in Australia and she believed it would be a great would be a great addition to the Robertson and Southern Highlands community.
She said she hoped the benefits of the community-based, non-commercial organisation’s would be:
- a great resource, and a place for women to meet
- a place to promote women’s health and well being
- show other women your skills, crafts and trades and learn new ones
- raise money for good causes
- use workshop machinery, tools and materials to make things
- help recycle materials and repair things
The plan is for the new group to be held in the Robertson CTC at 58/60 Hoddle Street, Robertson, (opposite Robertson Farm Machinery) the same location a the Men’s Shed.
There would be separate days for the Women’s and Men’s Sheds to meet and there could also be joint days.
Ms Sacks said members of both groups believe there would be great cross-over of skills with the Robertson Men’s Shed. It would also allow for the reduction/sharing of costs and be a great place to make new friends. The Robertson Men’s Shed Inc. (RMSI) have voted to encourage the formation of a Women’s Shed.
“Meanwhile the Women’s Shed (RWSI) would enable a much better use of the shed that is going to be constructed behind the CTC and do all the things for women that a Men’s Shed does for blokes,” she said.
“It would be good to get our Women’s Shed going before the Christmas new-year break so please come along.”
Any interested Southern Highlands women are welcome to attend a meeting on December 8 at 10:30AM to the Robertson CTC.
