After a 15 year fight, renal services are finally coming to Bowral and District Hospital.
It’s been a long and sometimes arduous campaign for the community-based Southern Highlands Renal Appeal.
The group has raised more than $700,000 for what they hoped would someday become a reality, and today (November 2) they will learn they have taken a huge leap towards their goal.
Wollondilly MP Jai Rowell told the Southern Highland News he was “very excited to announce that renal services are coming to Bowral.”
The Southern Highlands Renal Appeal met with Goulburn MP Pru Goward, Mr Rowell and NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard last month to discuss the need for a renal service at the hospital.
“As a result of the recent meeting the NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard, has listened to the community and we are getting the services we need.”
“The South Western Sydney Local Health District board is planning to extend renal services to the Southern Highlands.”
Patients with less-complex clinical needs will have support closer to home.
Prior to this announcement patients had to travel to Campbelltown, Liverpool of Fairfield hospital for treatment.
Mr Rowell said that for more complicated cases, patients will still need to travel as “under the current method.”
“To have a level of renal services in the Highlands is fantastic news, I am so pleased to announce this,” Mr Rowell said.
Details are still being fine-tuned, more information for the community will be available soon.
