The Wingecarribee Bridge on the Hume Highway has reopened.

The Hume Highway bridge was closed at Berrima after a B-double truck crashed through the safety barrier of the northbound carriageway of the bridge and caught fire around 8.30am on Wednesday, October 11.

A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said engineers and specialist crews carried out structural assessments and repairs to ensure the bridge could be safely reopened to traffic.

“Concrete used in bridge repairs has set overnight and line marking was completed early this morning.”

“Motorists should follow the direction of traffic control and reduced speed limits while temporary crash barriers are in place. Permanent repairs will be carried out at a later date.

“Heavy vehicle operators with loads more than 3.5 metres wide, which were unable to use the bridge under contraflow conditions due to width restrictions, will again be able to use the bridge.”

Traffic is expected to return to normal levels once the bridge is fully operational.

Roads and Maritime thanked the community and motorists for their patience during the work to get the bridge fully operational after the incident.
