The thing about cancer is…

Cancer Council NSW will launch a new podcast series, designed for people affected by cancer, including carers, families and friends of those living with cancer, in the Southern Highlands.

The series of 10 information podcasts is called ‘The Thing About Cancer’.

The podcasts focus on key areas identified by Cancer Council NSW as topics that resonate with many people affected by a cancer diagnosis.  The series is hosted by radio broadcaster and cancer survivor, Julie McCrossin, and each podcast will feature expert guests and people with personal experiences of cancer.

Ms McCrossin said podcasts are quickly becoming one of Australia’s fastest growing content mediums.

“We know that every year in the Southern Highlands/South Western region alone, it is estimated that approximately 4710 people will be diagnosed with cancer. Often they are dealing with complex decisions that require an understanding of cancer, its treatment, and its ongoing management,” she said.

“That’s why this podcast series is such a great resource for people affected by cancer in the Southern Highlands. It covers topics as diverse as considering treatment options, sex and cancer, coping with fatigue and explaining cancer to kids.

“The episode ‘Explaining cancer to kids’ is one that I think will resonate with a lot of Southern Highlands families. The thing about cancer is that it can feel like a really tough thing to explain to kids. You ask yourself - how much do they need to know? Isn’t it better to protect them? Won’t it just confuse and scare them? And what about teenagers – how much can they handle?

Cancer Council NSW’s Community Programs Coordinator, Sally Lewis, said the podcasts provided an opportunity for Cancer Council to increase access to information, particularly for people who are time poor or feel too unwell to read, as well as those who have low literacy or low vision.

The free podcasts are available to download from the Cancer Council NSW website or via the iTunes store. Visit cancercouncil.com.au/podcasts for more information about the series and upcoming episodes.
