A 100 kilowatt roof-mounted system comprising of 344 solar panels was commissioned after a two-week installation.
Early calculations suggest the installation will generate about 145,000 kilowatts of electricity each year. This means almost 16 per cent of the centre’s current annual electricity consumption will be derived from renewable energy.
Importantly, it’s estimated all costs associated with the project will be recouped within four years. The installation is the largest solar renewable energy installation undertaken by council and follows similar projects carried out on council’s Southern Highlands Regional Livestock Exchange, the Southern Highlands Welcome Centre, Bowral Library, the Mittagong Rural Fire Service Building and the Resource Recovery Centre.
Not only is this latest project a great example of council working towards reducing its ongoing electricity costs, but it shows our commitment to clean and sustainable future energy solutions.
Now, all too often our youth cop an undeserved reputation, but a couple of functions I attended last week reassured me our future is indeed in safe hands.
The first was the Oxley College Foundation Day which commemorates the college’s establishment. The evening featured a celebration of the arts with music, drama performances and spoken word recitals by students.
The other was a speaking and drama competition hosted by Chevalier College, ‘Speaking 4 the Planet’.
Students from several schools across the shire attended the event and spoke on environmental issues of concern to them. Their arguments demonstrated a deep understanding of ecological themes impacting our broader community and future sustainability.
Hearing our young citizens speak so passionately and eloquently about our natural environment revealed a maturity beyond their years. The students, their parents and schools should all be extremely proud of their efforts.
