Bowral Police Inspector John Klepczarek said residents should be particularly aware of the danger of starting fires.
“Whether accidentally or deliberately, there are heavy penalties and even imprisonment for starting fires,” he said.
Inspector Klepczarek said police were once again reminding people not to leave children or pets in hot cars.
“The inside of a car heats up dramatically fast, even when the windows are down, and it doesn’t take long for tragic consequences,” he said.
Several RFS teams responded to large grass fires south of Goulburn that began on January 17, which threatened homes, property and livestock.
“This is also a timely reminder to look at your property and check if there’s any type of fire fuel – fuel cans, wood piles, leaves in gutters,” Inspector Klepczarek said.
He said members of the public should be vigilant, and take immediate action if they see smoke during bushfire season.
“If they see smoke, call 000 or alert the RFS as soon as possible to ensure any fires are extinguished as soon as possible.”
