The Cows Create Careers program recently wrapped up at the school.
The program is run by Dairy Australia where students look after calves for three weeks, feed them and document their progress.
The program is also a competition with a scientific report, model or movie, letter and funny photo submitted for judging.
Moss Vale have been involved in the program since 2007 when it won the NSW region.
This year students looked after three calves- Jerry, Ivana and Ultima.
The Sherbornes have been involved with the program since it first started at Moss Vale.
“We’ve had kids coming through after school and then leading on to actual employment through us,” Grant said.
“There are others that have gone through and are employed in other industries such as veterinary or agronomy. It opens them right up to management possibilities and other careers. There are a lot of other skills that are needed throughout the industry.”
Student Lily Wallbridge said there were some surprising discoveries along the way.
“Some things I didn’t expect would happen like the way they behaved as they grew up and started eating differently,” she said.
For some of the students it was the second time they had been involved in the program.
Lorna Anderson said it had been interesting to watch how the calves differed.
“The different personalities they had was really interesting. There was one that was really flighty, and a really friendly one and a timid one that just wanted to be with the other ones,” she said.
‘You pick up on a lot more things doing it twice. It was really good to learn about the diary industry and have a hands on experience with them as well.”
The program aims to provide students with a greater understanding of the dairy industry and the many different careers it can involve.
“When we first got them [the calves] we learnt a lot about the kinds of jobs you can do,” Lily said.
